Apple Cinnamon Grain Free Granola

Amazing!  This is my favorite cereal yet.  Even the kids like it!  They haven’t been too thrilled with all the nuts I put in the grain free granola but they are warming up to it.  I love how filling this cereal is.  My husband filled a bowl like he did in the past with his normal cereal.  I just laughed and said, “You’re not going to be able to eat all that.”  He ended up sharing it with two of our kids.

Soaking your nuts and grains overnight helps remove some of the phytic acid, an anti-nutrient.  For this recipe, I used less coconut and more nuts than my last.  I didn’t increase the sweetener because my homemade applesauce was very sweet.  You can taste your cereal before baking to get the sweetness level right for you.

Apple Cinnamon Grain Free Granola

  • 16oz almond slices
  • 1 cup sunflower seeds
Cover with water and 1 tbsp salt and let set overnight.  Drain.
  • 2 cups coconut, shredded and unsweetened
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil (or butter), melted
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 cup applesauce 
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
Heat oven to 200F.  Combine nuts and remaining ingredients, mixing well to combine.  Line 2 sheet pans with parchment paper and granola spread evenly.  Let bake for several hours, 4-6.  Stir occasionally and break up large pieces.
Serve with milk or yogurt.  I like to sprinkle a small handful of golden raisins and a tablespoon of ground flaxseed in my cereal.

    Thanks for the recipe! I just found your blog this morning and had to laugh when I read your about me. I’m also an Air Force wife, homeschooling mom of 4 boys. We are a GAPS family, as well.

      Definitely! The only reason I don’t do it in my dehydrator is because I don’t have the tray liner and I’m too lazy to get the saran wrap out, lol!

    Also, I’m curious about soaking in salt. Is it for flavor or to help get rid of the phytates and anti-nutrients?

      You know, I’ve wondered that myself. I’ve always done it with salt because that is what the book “Nourishing Traditions” says but I believe it is only for flavor. Having a little salt with your sweet makes it really tasty which is why I add salt.

    Any reason pecans would not work instead of almonds? My daughter loves pecans,and I would think they’d be yummy in this.

    How do you store this and how long will it keep? I wonder about that because of the applesauce.

      Once the cereal is cooked, it’s all dehydrated so the applesauce isn’t a problem. It’ll keep in an airtight container on the shelf as long as the oils stay fresh. I would want to eat it within a few months. If you want to keep it longer, storing in the freezer would extend it’s life.

    I would like to make this with sliced tigernuts (which aren’t actually nuts!) since I can’t eat almonds. And I bought some sprouted sunflower seeds (already soaked and dehydrated). So when I combine all the ingredients, I’m wondering if I should dehydrate it, or just bake it at a higher temperature. Any thoughts?
